Silverbear Ammo

Looking to pick up some in 7.62x39 (hollowpoint and/or softpoint). Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

I've shot some silver bear in 9x18. It's dirty, it's slower than the Winchester in 9x18, but it goes bang every time. Accuracy at 25ft is in the 7 ring every time. At the same distance I can put Hornady 9x18 in the 10 ring every time.

That said, most of my target ammo is silver bear because it's cheap.

Not bad stuff, no problems with it but it's a bit dirty. Not quite consistant enough for long range prarie dog shooting, but I sure as hell woulden't want anybody loosing a magazine load of them at me.

Golden Tiger is supposedly some of the best Russian stuff available.

However I question if there is really any difference between any of the Russian stuff.

Good ammo. I've used Silverbear .223 in my ARs and Sigs. No problems.

Re: Silverbear Ammo

I have no experience with their 7.62X39. I've shot a ton of their 9mm over the years though. It always goes bang, is reasonably accurate and I've had very good reliability using it. I can't say how dirty it is because I usually shoot a few hundred rounds at a time and the gun is going to be nasty at the end of the day no matter what I shoot.
My downstairs was flooded a few years ago. It was a small flood but my ammo foot locker was under about a foot of water for at least 3 hours. I had several thousand rounds of ammo underwater. About 2000 rounds were 9mm Silverbear. I wiped them down a couple of days later and spent the next year shooting them up. I might have had two misfires out of the 2000. Of course I also had an equal number of gun show reloads underwater that performed as well. Go figure, who would have thought unlaquered ammo would hold up so good? I'll keep buying Silverbear if the price is right.

Never heard of any complaints about Silver Bear. I shoot a lot of their 223.

I run the 7.62x39 silver bear all the time.
My WASR-10 digests it fine.I VERY seldom have had a FTF or FTE.
I'm presently paying $6.99 per box (20rds.),so I still love the corrosive russian surplus ammo.

Dumb question here. I'm assuming that Silver Bear and Brown Bear are made by the same company. Is one supposed to be a higher grade than the other?

Barnaul and Ulyanovsk both make Silver Bear and Brown Bear. They are the same quality, IMO.

The same company makes Brown Bear. I've shot about 550 rounds of 223, 62gr HP Brown Bear. Not one problem. It's hotter than Wolf. Wolf is the one causing most of the problems. And it's all much cheaper than what they want locally for brass cased. Like around $160 a case cheaper.

They are both steel cased but the coatings are different. I like the Golden Bear because it's brass coated and they seem to load in the mags easier. I haven't put many rounds through my new AR yet but I figure the harder it is to get the rounds into the mags the more wear and tear there will be on the magazine's feed lips. There seems to be less friction loading the brass coated rounds. I might be wrong but I'll pay a few extra cents per box for peace of mind. www.cheaperthandirt.com is a decent site for this ammo (and the rest of it's gear) because it's reviewed by it's buyers. The ______ Bear ammo usually gets a decent review on this site. I hope to put some down range tomorrow.

The Silver Bear is zinc coated steel cased ammo. I believe the Brown Bear is just steel cased.

Re: Silverbear Ammo

Brown, Silver, and Golden Bear are all manufactured by Barnaul in Russia. All of them are steel cased, only the exterior finish of the case is different.

Brown Bear = lacquer-coated or, more recently, polymer-coated steel case. The polymer coating is new for this line.

Silver Bear = zinc-plated steel case.

Golden Bear = brass-plated steel case.
